Understanding the Breast Implant
A breast implant uses a silicone elastomer or packet that is typically packed with silicone gel or a soft cohesive silicone gel that has a shape retaining memory feature. The implants can also be filled with a saline solution. Silicone gel and saline (salt-water) solution are the best-known and most extensively used and researched fillers. In addition to these fillers, alternative fillers such as soya oil, PVP and Hydrogel have also been used for breast enlargement.
The fillers are cased in a variety of materials which can react in different ways to the surrounding breast tissue and consultation with us will allow you to learn more about the options available and which one would be best for you.
Myths about Silicon and their Safety
For over five decades, silicone implants have been used for a wide range of treatments. Plastic surgery and breast augmentation are some of the greatest users of silicone implants, as the use of silicone has had no known contribution to the risk of cancer. Extensive research in the medical field has shown no evidence of a correlation between the use of silicone and the increased occurrence of breast cancer.
Breast implant surgery does not alter the natural ability of a woman to produce breast milk, nor does it hinder or cause uneasiness in breast feeding.
While claims have circulated that breast implants have a link to auto immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma and connective tissue disorders (CTDs), as well as other symptoms including back pain, chronic fatigue and difficulty in concentration, extensive medical research has proven otherwise.
